Tenebrae of Holy Thursday 8pm at IHMThe Office of Tenebrae is a unique way of praying the Divine Office which combines Matins & Lauds (the two morning hours) into one celebration which can be prayed after dark on the night before or before dawn the morning of each day of the Sacred Triduum. The chant which accompanies this prayer is being specially prepared by singers from around Madison as this music is some of the most powerful and challenging in our whole Catholic tradition. Tenebrae walks worshipers through the Passion story in detail, recalling events in salvation history which have led to these fateful moments in the life of Christ.

Chrism Mass with Bishop Hying at 10am (at St. Maria Goretti Church: 5313 Flad Ave., Madison)
Chrism Mass brings together every priest of the Diocese to join Bishop Hying to consecrate the Sacred Oils used in sacraments for the coming year. This is also the Mass at which priests renew their vow of obedience to Bishop Hying and his successors.
Mass of the Lord's Last Supper
7pm with Bishop Hying at IHM
This Mass commemorates the night of the Last Supper and the Institution of the Eucharist. At the end of Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is processed out of the main church to be adored elsewhere, recalling Christ's vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Good Friday, March 29

Solemn Celebration of the Lord's Passion

The Solemn Celebration is the only worship which occurs on Good Friday and commemorates the final moments of Christ's life before His Crucifixion. Although this is not Mass, Communion occurs with Blessed Sacrament consecrated at the Mass of the Lord's Last Supper.

The Vigil of Easter is the most unique liturgical event of the entire Church year. Largely unchanged from the structure developed in the earliest days of the catacombs, this Mass begins in total darkness and slowly develops into the first celebration of the Lord's Resurrection through the blessing of fire, the reading of salvation history from the Earth's Creation to the covenants of the Lord and His people, to the renewal of our Baptismal Vows, the blessing of Paschal Water, and the celebration of the Eucharist.
